Default I digress - Intakes are no more than noise makers (dyno tested)

aFe Intake dyno before and after

So...purchased an aFe Stage 2 Magnum Force Intake for my '10 4.6l 3v. This intake uses a dry cone filter and the aFe airbox attaches to the factory lower airbox.

Prior to installing it I took it to the dyno to get a baseline without any mods done. I then installed the intake and loved the way it sounded. So, to see if I got my claimed 16+hp as advertised by aFe () I took it to the dyno again. In an effort to maintain as many control variables as possible I filled up at the same fuel station with 93 the weeks leading up to the dyno pulls and ever since. I also performed no other maintenance to the truck and attempted to test at similar atmospheric conditions.

As you can see, very SMALL gains were achieved and with todays dyno being 10* cooler (was within 3* then the rain came up as it was being strapped down) this should have HELPED achieve the 16hp as claimed and not work against the intake...16 hp?!?!? I see 5 hp gain deflated...

I will keep it on the truck because...well, it's on there and I still like the way it opens up the exhaust and resonates > 1/2 throttle. I am quite disappointed though and I did these dyno tests to either prove that intake kits do or do not work. I think you can see from my results...

My before run and after run were laid on this same chart. Sorry chart is in mph, I have one to cross reference with RPM if anyone cares enough for me to do that. Below the dyno graph is the testing conditions.

Personally... I'm surprised at a 5hp gain. 15hp gain is just a bit optimistic I would think.

Thanks for posting

The gain is prob from the temp difference as well as variations of the dynometer. I mean, out of 3 consecutive pulls none of them are exactly the same. These two were the best numbers from each set of pulls.

How do the worst numbers compare?

Does the worst pull with the CAI show significant/any improvements over the worst pull without? Is the worst pull with the CAI still even/slightly better than the best without?

Unfortunately I cannot produce those numbers. Second trip to the dyno and this was all i was given. whats even mor confusing is that the Chart above has SAE correction applied. My previous chart shows with STD correction whclich showed about 7hp better on my non CAI pulls so i cant tell youbwhat my worst pull without CaI is compared to this. My worst pull with STD correction applied show 257hp/278tq

IMHO air intakes are generally a supporting mod. That is, they should only be upgraded to help realize the potential of some other performance modification. They are not really a performance mod in and of themselves. Same goes for exhaust systems--more or less.
On the other hand, if it's an auditory or aesthetic mod I get it.
