Default K&N Air Filter

Has anyone out there used K&N air filters? My mechanic suggested one. I have the utmost faith in him, but I'd like to hear a testimonial or two from fellow F-150 owners before I spend $53.00 on one.

TIA

Are you talking about the replacement filter for the original? I've used them before with good results. Just don't over oil them and you'll be good.

I'm interested in this too. My truck is an Ecoboost. Is there any benefit to a K&N or other aftermarket drop-in high flow filter?

Regarding K&N ...
  • increases the likelihood of oil contaminating the MAF sensor. *Over time even minute oil contamination decreases power and MPG. When it's REALLY EXCESSIVE it will be intuitively obvious.
    .
  • any increase in CFM comes at the expense of filtration.
    .
  • cleaning is a PITA. *And, Yes, I've done it on MAS equipped vehicles.
    .
  • Motorcraft, OEM air filters ...
    • meets|exceeds engine air intake CFM requirements.
    • good for 30,000+ miles (depending upon conditions).
    • ABSOLUTELY NO possibility of MAF sensor oil contamination.
    • dispose and replace maintenance.

That's about what I figured. Plus that oil contamination of the MAF can and will also coat the compressor fins thereby making them less efficient.

I'm more interested in the dry type of aftermarket filters. I had an Amsoil dry filter and was pretty impressed with it. Is anyone running one of those?

Default K&N is a quality brand

K&N is a premium brand so it's not unexpected that you'll pay a bit more for their filters. That being said, I've been using them for a few years now, and have no complaints, even with the heftier price tag.
