Default Hollow cats on EcoBoost anyone?

Hey Guys,
Been looking around and haven't seen anything on this yet for our trucks. I need to pull my Y pipe out soon to do some work. I have also been considering purchasing an aftermarket Y pipe, of the off road type.

Now I understand the typical argument of keeping the old one so I can "go back to stock if necessary," only to keep some big old heavy chunk of factory exhaust that later gets pulled out of the garage, after the car is already gone and either pitched out or sold cheap. (done this a few times now.)

SO my question is, has anyone tried hollowing out the factory cats on the 2013s yet? Hows it sound etc? I just am having a hard time with a $450 delete when I feel like I can spend an hour with a screwdriver and a snake. I'm not expecting Kooks like quality, but should I see some increase in sound / top end power? With how notably bad our exhaust systems are I would think I could gain some power here. My SCT, I believe, has a tune for a off road Y pipe, so that should be covered as well.

Thoughts? Ty.

DON'T DO IT! Cat converters removed or hollowed out will cause HUGE detination issues and blow the engine F.A.S.T., your removing back pressure and the computer will NOT compensate, O2 sensors WILL fail and the EGR's will jump, if you have boost you're going to boost your block in finite pieces...

I take it you do not have much experience with modifying vehicles? A tiny amount of what you said is true, the rest ignores most of my question.

Please dont take this the wrong way, I am simply being direct.

This simply is not correct, and many people run them without a tune. you will throw a CEL but I will get into that later. This is a VERY common mod and product on the market. check youtube for "off road y pipe ecoboost"

http://www.cjponyparts.com/afe-y-pip...FSMV7AoddEcAqw

http://www.makperformance.com/ecoboost.html

http://www.lethalperformance.com/koo...ad-y-pipe.html

Again, this is done all the time, not a big issue. I have defoulers for the rear O2s Also I have a tuner so I CAN compensate for the flow.

if you have boost you're going to boost your block in finite pieces...
not sure if you did not read or are unfamiliar with models. The ecoboost is a 3.5L Twin Turbo, one per bank. It feeds into a a Y pipe with the drivers side being a considerably farther run. Also the trucks have a issue with condensation building in the inter cooler, ultimately ending in the drivers side bank, causing plugs to go and poor burn, meaning unburnt fuel and water vapor is blocking up the drivers side cat, causing catastrophic failure and the block ending up in finite pieces.

If yours is a 2013 there probably isn't an issue. It it is an older model Ford will fix it. It's really not necessarily an engine problem, but an issue with the design of the intercooler during certain weather conditions. The engine itself is rock solid and the intercooler issue is easily fixed. Ford at one time had thousands of newer designed intercoolers on back order so they are taking action to correct this.
The new issue with age on these is spark plug cracks something so small will likely go overlooked by the technician or DIY type and they usually cause intermittent misfires like this one. It is something to look at if you are having any of these ongoing issues.....
While pulling a trailer from Pa to Fl, cruising at 70mph pushed pedal to the floor to pass and the engine lost power and wouldn't maintain speed. Left off the pedal and the truck felt was going over rumble strips for several seconds and then smoothed out and ran fine, this happend 4 times in 2300 miles. The last time the check engine light flashed and than stayed on, called my dealer from the road and made an appointment so I could drop it off as as soon as I returned home. The left catalytic converter was plugged.
I am an engineer, so it bothers me Ford treats this like it is three separate issues.

Thank you for your interest though, I was really hoping to hear one before I did it. My biggest concern is sound... lol

Mr Dalton..

Hate to say it I have modded more cars than most on here. ONLY if you do it correctly will it be fine. I am a memeber of the NHRA by night and, a (I will not mention what I do by day.) Without a reprogram, O2 over ride, exhaust, intake, and pressure modulator recalibration in the ECU. The car/truck WILL blow, period it not a matter of if, it is when. Think of it this way.... You're trying to blow air through a pipe FROM BOTH ENDS! Now tell me that works and if I am wrong, then you can call me a liar... ( I know you didn't though LOL) Why? Over compensation of foward and back pressure because of the change in that one large component. I have had to fix this issue on many "want to be gear heads" from not doing it correctly. My point is if done correctly, you can get a away with it just fine, There werer no catalytic converters back in the day, just fuel, air, and spark! Todays engines run far more complex with computers. If you just simply hollow out the Cats, you are asking for damage. I hope that cleared up my intentions... Thank you for the response. Take care

Now I agree with this statement, but am left wondering why you felt your warning was necessary with none of the info asked?

sorry for being so harsh myself. I know this is often asked by some "want to be gear heads" as you put it who did not think of the calibration required.

Hello

The reason was I thought you were going to blindly just do this to your truck... I am truly sorry I was not clear about it the first time around. I hope all is well and thank you for giving me the chance to clarify this. Let me know if you run into any problems with the mods... Happy Hauling LOL...

Default Hollowed cats.

I have done this and it sounds so good. I am tuned but I still have all my O2 sensors and have never thrown a code. Truck runs amazing! All stock exhaust but now you can hear turbo whistle through exhaust without any other V6 rice rocket sound. If you reset your computer after you do this your truck will adjust accordingly. These trucks run rich and my cats were plugged up I kept throwing code P0430, P0420 catalytic stystem below threshold so I got sick of dealing with it and dropped my Y pipe and cut a rectangle chunk out of each one gutted them and welded the piece back on and man does it sound great, runs great and no more codes. I may data log and have MPT lean it up a bit so I’m not getting so much carbon build up. Anyway good luck! What makes anyone think that doing this versus a cat less downpipe system is any different is exactly that a cat less downpipe once you remove the guts from your cats smh.

Gut them and add a defouler to take care of the cel if it pops.

Worst thing that will happen is possibly a little blow by. Add a catch can to fix that issue. Common with the 4cylinder ecoboost engines. Your engine is not going to blow just from deleting cats.

So your actual exhaust note didn’t change? I’ve been wanting to do this to get more turbo whistle but I absolutely do not want the fast and furious exhaust note. I also have to wait until my warranty is up.
