You're going to get all kinds of opinions as everyone likes different sounds. I have a 2007 FX2 5.4 and just changed the exhaust last weekend. I wanted what you're asking for and think I got it. I do not like the Flowmaster crackle or loud hollow sound from any system and didn't have a lot of money to spend. I have two teens in private school, mortgage, retirement to worry about and other expensive hobbies.

After a LOT of reading, on-line LISTENING with a good sound system, I decided on Magnaflow. I'm a DIY guy so I bought a more or less Universal "muffler back" F150 kit off Ebay for $230. It came with a MF 12258 SIDO (18", single 2.5" in, dual 2.25" out, stainless steel muffler), mandrel bent (no wrinkles in the tubes) tailpipes and weld on 3.5" slash cut rolled end tips. Eight 2.25 clamps, one 2.5" clamp and four hangars were included.

Working on ramps my son and I got the OEM muffler and tailpipe off in one piece but had to buy a 2.5" by 18" extension pipe to attach ahead of the MF. In four hours I got as far as getting everything on except the final two tailpipes since the hangars aren't long enough and I don't want tailpipes under the bumper but in the stock behind the rear tire location.

Long response but here's the point. I love the Magnaflow 12258. It has just the refined rumble I was looking for with none of the raspy bark or crackle. Cabin drone is minimal and pleasant at 40, 70 and 80mph. When you're coasting it's like OEM, silent. Idle is louder than OEM but mellow. You're not going to **** off neighbors or wake anyone coming in late.

Go to Youtube and search 5.4 magnaflow, flowmaster, borla, etc. There are hundreds of clips. Some awful, some very good.

But, for the hassle of putting it on, I would just buy the muffler and go to a shop and have it installed for me. Muffler shop guys, those that do it right anyway, have my respect.

If you have the money, there are direct fit cat-back systems from vendors that go right on with none of the puzzle challenge. You'll pay several hundred more for these.

One thing though, it apparently sounds mean enough that every other pickup driver wants to race off the light or catch up to me, but I'm still the same old guy just getting groceries or taking the dogs out or camping that I was with the quiet OEM system.

Go for it.

Default Legato Performance Alternative

I hope that we can offer a suggestions. Legato Performance offers a cost effective, quality system that delivers excellent sound - the point to all this exhaust talk. We sell a 16-gague, 409 stainless steel system with high polished 304 stainless steel 4-inch diameter tips. We sell a chambered muffler so there is actually "noise" reduction allowing the sound to exit. Our standard Ford F150 V8 & V6 kits all for both rear or behind the rear tire exit - all tubing is included in the kit. The sound is excellent as our comments on YouTube will attest. Our kits sell for under $450 complete with everything you need for the install - and in many cases there is no cutting necessary (dependent on the cab length - not associated with the kit itself.) We hope you will take a look. We hope you will check us out

It sounds like one of our catback systems may work for you. What tip style do you prefer?

I have the Roush dual exhaust (off road version) on my 2004 5.4L. Nice aggressive growl when you get on the gas but surprisingly quiet when you are just cruising down the highway.

I agree with covertness. Roush Offroad is my favorite exhaust for the 5.4's.

I personally like the sound of magnaflow, borla and mbrp. They are louder than stock but not harsh.

On my 07 I went with a Gibson exhaust and loved it. On my 13 with the 3.5L eccoboost I went with a Maga flow and got a little bit of growl out of her. On my 16 I went with a Flow master because it had more growl than the others I had owned.
