So happy to see this concept has been taken and modified and perfected by all of you. I actually finally retired my bike rack as I purchased a cap for my truck, now for a new mounting solution!

Default Different Tonneau

Because I have the Bakflip VP with the seams on the underside there is way less room between the cover and the cab. What I'm asking is if the bike mounts could successfully be mounted DIRECTLY to the Bakflip on the metal near the cab? I like the solution of installing the aluminum, but it doesn't appear to be an option for me.

It could probably be done, BUT I would still add aluminum/steel panels for extra support, the stress of the bikes may prove too much for the thin aluminum used there. Just drill out the holes for those little rivets, remove them, and use a long piece of metal like on the examples shown here on the top and bottom.

That being said, I think you might actually be able to fit the Yakima Blockheads on there the original way, just turn them around, that square bit would fit into the gap on the back side of the blockheads.

See what I mean?

Something looked odd to me in your picture, and I just realized what it is...you have stuck the adhesive bumpers in a location where they aren't needed. Those bumpers are eating up a bit of valuable real estate. Remove them and you should have clearance.

For the Hawkules elegant solution, what number Yakima landing pads are you using and how do you attach them to the bar?

I used Landing Pad 1 but others will work. They are screwed to the bar with heavy metal screws and locktight. Nothing fancy.

Where have you guys sourced the flat pieces of aluminum to use for strength? It looks like the OP had a local shop fab them up for him. I was wondering if anyone had found anything at their local hardware store that had the same results.
