Going over speed bumps in my f150 is damn near unbearable....

You're looking for top out not bottom out. This could happen but you would have to be jumping the truck whereas preload is constantly trying to push the spring down harder so when going over speed bumps if going to fast you get a harsh thud.

Before I started driving a friend of my dads who was a serious car guy told me whenever I get to a speedbump slow down before it and just as you hit it let off the brake completely. That way your aren't on the brake which causes the truck to nose dive. This made perfect since to me. If the vehicle is in a nose dive the shocks are in a compressed state. Hitting a speed bump would only cause it to compress more making for a harder hit.
Just some food for thought.

I have a 2005 2wd 5.4 xlt with 116k and my ride was how you described it-- harsh over bumps, nose dives like crazy when i brake, turning would cause massive sway. Very very uncomfortable, i wanted to sell he truck.
Just put in Bilstein 4600 front struts. They are on backorder now. Had them installed for $80 from a mechanic on craigslist.
Nose sits level again. My ride is AMAZING!!! Brand new truck man.
Ride over speed bumps like nothing. Turning going 30-40 no sway. Nose doesnt dip excessively when hard braking. Minor imperfections on the road are not a problem. Its just so comfortable. Best $280 (installation included) ive ever spent.
You wont be disappointed my friend.
