Default Installing manual hubs

I have a 2003 F150 XLT and have been having problems with the 4WD for years. It won't engage right when I shift it in, sometimes it will 100 yards down the road, sometimes 2 miles. Plus it won't stay in. It goes in and out. I had the actuator replaced a couple of years ago but it still does the same thing. A friend of mine that does some mechanical work suggested just putting manual hubs on it which I'm all for but I haven't been able to find any for the year of my truck. Is it not possible because of the vacuum system? I live in an area where a couple of feet of snow is common and would love to get this working by winter. Thanks in advance for any advice.
