Default I need more HP

I have an 03 SC with a 5 spd 4.0 V6. I just bought it before I deployed in July, so I only drove it for about a month before I left. What I don't like about it is the lack of power. It was a great deal, and already modded with 20s, dual flowmasters, billet grill, painted fiberglass bed cover, chrome nerf bars, etc, with only 42,000 miles on it. Just wondering what I can do to it to increase the power without spending an arm and leg. Not so much looking for speed or 1/4 mile times, just acceleration at start because it takes forever to accelerate and plain overall HP. Just wondering, because I am either thinking about doing alot more to it or trading up to a V8. Thanks for any advice!

Todd

Here is a solution, 5,248 cubic inches, 5,700 Hp V20, 4 turbo chargers, it is a light weight engine weighting 28,000 pounds.

Thanks! I do, however, like the rims, and the bed cover is great when we go on long trips with luggage for 4, plus alot of other stuff. I was thinking, CAIs, computer tune, etc. Don't know how much trouble a V8 swap would be with matching up to tranny. Maybe the easiest way to go would be a supercharger or turbocharger that will bolt right in. Any suggestions?

Whether or not you trade up to a V8 is strictly up to you. Of course, a supercharger would add some power, but you'll not really see the impact of that until mid range rpm's....dependent upon what type blower you buy.....roots or centrifugal.

CAI's and tunes are always good in my opinion....from past experiences on my Mustang. Based on what you've said, you'll need to compare apples to oranges (looks you have now vs. hp) and make the decision on what you want to do. IMO, though, your options are far greater with a V8 in terms of the performance you mentioned.

Just my 2cents, though.....

Gonna trade up to a crew cab V8 or or possibly a 250 because the supercab just doesn't have enough room in back. Kinda tight, evn with small children. Plus, the wife hates the 5 speed. Win, win for me!!

You can't go wrong with a crew cab, although I love my supercab just fine...

I have an 06 with the 4.2 and a manual trans.

I changed the rearend to increase my max tow wt, from 3.31 to 3.73. This made the truck quicker. $1000.00 parts and labor. Lost about 1/2 mpg.

I also bought a Diablo Super Sport u7151, this does add power throughout the whole range. You get the most with the higher octane settings. $300.00

I installed the K&N Filter in the stock breather, not sure how much that helped.

I an pleased with what I did so far, not going to make radical changes...

I am checking into one of the Throddle Body Spacers that clains that it swirls the air... better mixes fuel with air...about $100.00

I like the part about the rear end making the 4.2 better at towing. Now I'm thinking about doing that.

I read or heard somewhere that the 4.2 was designed to have the max torque at 2000 RPM. If that's the case, then your best towing speed may go down a MPH or two without considering any HP gain from the other mods.
