Default Closing tailgate with bakflip down

Will you break any bakflip hd, f1, g3 and vp if cover is down and then close the tailgate?

I always lift the last panel on mine. Seems like it might close with it down but I would worry about damaging the seals. Plus mine has a big sticker that says not to close the tailgate with the last panel locked down.

Prolly just mess up that seal along the tailgate. Make it a habit of lifting the cover before you slam your tailgate shut.

I installed mine on the first truck spring of 2009. For a long time yes, it was necessary to lift the back panel before closing. After many months the seal seemed to take a set and it was no longer necessary. Moved it to a new truck and that set seems to be working against sealing on the tailgate was well as before--need to get some warm weather and leave it out in the sun a few days.

It looks to me this a design improvement needed. There will be 5 of us using my truck and hope all will get this habit.

If not then, is the part that breaks by closing the door while the cover is closed, can this be replaced?

Why is it a design flaw. They explain to you to open the cover before you close you tailgate. If you fail to follow the instructions, it's their fault?

Just get in the habit of opening the cover. We've all had to do it.

I have no idea If that rear seal is a replaceable item. I'm sure a bunch of folks have ruined theirs.

It usually just forces the seal to bend down and doesn't go across the top of the tailgate where it should. As already said, if you do it enough, the seal will get used to it and kind of stay that way. If you "train it" well enough, then you might not have issues.

If you are dead set on closing it without taking the 2 seconds it takes to pull the cable and lift the cover the 1" it takes to sit itself up high enough to get past the tailgate, you can always adjust the entire cover forward a bit so there isn't as much of the seal on top of the tailgate. The less amount or depth of the seal that has to go over the tailgate, the easier it would be to close it without releasing the cover.

For those that may read this and don't understand, you don't have to hold the cover open or do anything while you close the tailgate. You can pull the release cable on the cover and lift it 1/2"-1" and it will rest on top of its own rail and allow you to easily close the tailgate. I do it out of habit now and like I said earlier, it takes 2 seconds to do it. If for some reason someone else forgets to do this, the worst it will do is press the seal down into the tailgate as opposed to on top of it.

I have always pulled the cable and lift up enough for the lid to clear the tailgate but my girlfriend shut it twice with the lid shut and no harm done.
Perhaps it had been on long enough that it had been "trained". Now I just do as mentioned above and lift the lid and then let it rest on it's own on top of the bed, then after I shut the tailgate just press down on the lid firmly to close. Has become habit now.
