Default 2012 5.0L aftermarket intake/tune

Howdy all!

I'm new to the forums, literally to forums all together, not just this one (so excuse me if I do something 'newbish'), and although I've had my truck for about 6 months now, 2012 Scab 5.0L Luxury, the 'new' feel is starting to wear off, even more. While I've done some cosmetic work *cue pictures* I yearn for a little more. I don't want my mileage to plummet [even more] so I only want to do fairly minor, (if possible) irreversible modifications. Searching through the GrandWest catalogue, I found the '57 Series' K&N OEM intake replacement kit (apparently a 12HP gain). I am concerned of my warranty, although I do have some leeway, being a Salesman at a Ford dealership, it doesn't mean immunity. Does any one have experience with an, or this particular intake system in the 5.0L's? I'm getting a chip as well, I've read 5 Star has had exceptional results with the the new Ford power-trains, but the combination of a new intake and chip seems sketchy to say the least, experience and opinions on chips/programmers and combinations of air intakes would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

your stock intake outflows your engine as it is, so more air wont do much for you wihtout any sort of tune, and note that the "HP gain" is within 3% of stock. probably well within the margin of error. IE doesnt do anything

. all the KN filters do is let more dust get through. being able to clean it will be nice, though.

the programmer WILL make a difference. the filter will help your engine breathe, alright. i just hope it likes dust

Mhmm... My understand was that it allows more air, meaning more oxygen, meaning larger combustion. Also, I doubt K&N filter let in 'dust', sure there will be unwanted forgein particles (just like OEM), but if actual dust, meaning a fair amount, got into the internals, that would cause engine failure, I'm sure K&N didn't build there prestige upon failures.

Any first hand 5.0L experince anyone?

K&N filters and similar work well, as long as they are cleaned properly and not over oiled. Lose the silencers, do the gotts mod. I'd try that first. Oh yea and get a programmer. If that doesn't do it for you, you can always get the K&N kit afterwards.

You're looking for intake mods, and you mentioned '5-Star', so I wanna give you one caution. I was perusing their site and saw that they're selling the Boss intake plenum for use on the F150. STAY AWAY from this piece for an F150. To be as short and succinct as possible, the Boss intake is designed to work with Boss cams, which are cut to deliver power HIGH up in the RPM's. The Boss has a 7500 redline, and it makes power damn close to it. People with Mustang GT's('11+) buy them because it's an almost 'instant' +30hp addition, provided you buy a tuner that raises your rev limiter to 7500rpm(some guys go over 8,000rpm) and obviously tweak your A/F, timing and etc..
If you look at the power spec on the Boss, you'll notice that it actually puts out LESS torque than the GT(20-ft/lbs), because the motor is tuned(with the plenum playing a large part) to obviously deliver power where you'll want it on the track-WAYYyyyy up north.
This is TOTALLY OPPOSITE of where you want your power in a truck. You're already dealing with a powerband that's tilted too far north for truck-use as it is with the 5.0L, adding this plenum will SHIFT it even higher, and your rev-limiter will cut out WAY before the plenum is designed to be at its most efficient level anyway. To add insult to injury, you'll also quite possibly LOSE TORQUE.
Not trying to hijack your thread, and I tried to be as quick as possible with my 'warning'. Since you're looking to spend $ on an intake, and you mentioned 5-Star, I thought I'd better warn you about the Boss plenum, since it appears they're trying to sell it to F150 owners on their site.
If you'd like any more info, or I was confusing in what I wrote(I had a '11 GT then a '12 Boss, and I bought and installed a Boss plenum on the GT), feel free to PM me.

how do you think they are going to allow more air to flow through without changing the size of the inlet or filter? use your head, man

and filters are filters. my bro had one, and when we took the filter off, there was very fine dust inside the intake tube. dust that wasnt present before the switch to KN

it looks like you just want someone to tell you that they put on the KN filter and now they are tokyo drifting. the only reason to get a KN would be for the money savings, as it can be washed.

Before you go posting partly incorrect info, please check your facts.Mike at 5Star has some awesome combos with his tunes.WITH the Boss intake you gain about 30ft lbs of torque at 3000 rpms, and yes you gain on the upper end as well.

Before YOU go posting 'incorrect' info, maybe YOU should check YOUR facts.
If you had read my post, you would have seen I wrote that I BOUGHT AND INSTALLED THE MANIFOLD, and I also TUNED WITH IT.
I know where and how it makes power, and what it's ENGINEERED TO WORK WITH. And the stock 5L in the F150 AINT IT! It'd be like taking an 850cfm carb, and running it on a dual-plane intake mani with RV cams.
What experience do YOU have with it?
I stand behind EVERYTHING I wrote.
But go ahead...PROVE ME WRONG.
Email the SVT Racing Dept, and ask 'em how well it'll work on a stock F150-5L. THEY designed it, and they know more about it than ANYONE ELSE.
Here's a hint:
EVERYBODY who sells the Boss Intake mani gets it from Ford Racing.
Ford Racing also sells to the public.
Here's their listing for the thing on their site. Pay close attention to what vehicles they say it'll work with, and WHERE it says it's optimal power is:

Just because you can 'fit' something onto your motor, that doesn't mean it's going to make it perform 'better'.
When's the last time you spun your 5,0L F150 to 7750RPM?
You do a lot of towing, hauling, off-roading, or ANY other truck-specific function while turning 7750RPM's do you?
Hopefully not, 'cuz the 5L in the F150 won't last very long spinning that high-IF you can even find a programmer that'll move the rev-limiter way up there on an F150. You'd prolly have to use software like EFI Live to pull this suicidal maneuver.

Just a note about the K&N. I had the 57 on my 08 5.4 for close to 160,000km and my intake tube was clean and it didn't let dust it. It performed well. Just a light bit of oil and you're good to go
