For 2017, the F-150 manual has been changed. For prior years, the manual recommends 87, and then says "For vehicles with EcoBoost engines, to provide improved performance, we recommend premium fuel for severe duty usage such as trailer tow."
For 2017, the manual currently says "For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer."
So, there is no longer a distinction that specifies high octane for Ecoboost while towing, it states higher octane for best overall vehicle and engine performance.
That is a big change. Wonder if the manual will soon be edited...

The Raptor Supplement Manual for the gen 1's even stated the 6.2L produces 401hp on 87 and 411hp on premium.

For myself a vehicle that requires 91 or higher is not an option, i hunt out in the middle of nowhere with only small service stations in the local villages. These small gas stations only have regular and diesel.

That means you can buy a 2017 Raptor. Premium fuel is NOT required.
