a good head shop can hand polish that right back at. the benefit of THAT is, if those are your "lean" cylinders by nature of the intake design, you'll end up with a tiny bit less static compression in those cylinders this time around so they won't be so "hot"

I went and saw the heads in person and its beyond hand polishing that back out. There were some nicks about 1/8" deep. I would much rather just buy a new set of ported heads to go with the stroker.

The real question - what caused the failure? Dropped valve? Lean cylinder? Not enough fuel pump? Over rev?

Imperative you find the cause so you don't repeat.

I have been working on blown Ford modulars for the better part of 10 years. I actually have a 2001 Mustang Cobra with a Vortech supercharger pushing around 14lbs, still on the stock hyper pistons. Typically what happens is the engine detonates (per-ignition), which breaks the piston and the chunk that breaks off floats into the combustion chamber and causes things like this to happen. I an assure you the rods and crank in these engines are far from a weak link. Hypereutectic pistons fragment upon detonation and just destroy everything.

My Cobra is making in excess of 530rwhp on the stock engine, but I have to run racing fuel in order to avoid detonation, not to mention I have had the car tuned by one of the best Ford tuners in the business. Obviously not ideal for a daily driver.

Best of luck getting your truck on the road. You might look into a meth injection kit to keep the IAT's down to compliment your new build. I have a buddy running a kit from www.alkycontrol.com on his 99 Cobra with a non-intercooled Vortech T-trim making 20lbs. Kit is very nice and has worked out well for him.

That is some good tech. I'm aware of hypers and their weaknesses, but wasn't aware of their ability to fragment like that. I suspected detonation as well.

I feel so bad it makes me want to pitch in. Looking at the pictures reminds me of looking at the malnourished children in africa with flies landing on their eyelashes. "For just 35 cents a day, you could help rebuild this poor fragmented engine...". I won't actually be pitching in any money though, unless you just want my 35 cents, I can afford that... lol, Seriously though, Best of luck can't wait to see the new stroker in action!

Well its definitely going to be cost a little bit more than expected, but its a perfect chance to do it once and do it the right way. I ordered the motor Thursday and was told it would be about 5-6 weeks for build time and than another week or two for install, so hopefully it should be up again mid February.

The youtube hits from having an engine ilke that in there will make up for the cost difference.
