Question Rebuild or Longblock or Shortblock?

I have an 02 5.4 2V with 205000 miles. I am getting a "performance rebuild" on the transmission. My question is for the motor. Would I be better off to buy a new long or short block and have the heads and intake ported or just rebuild my stock motor and port and polish its components. And have a valve job done. I plan on getting headers and maybe a mild cam. I was quoted $5500 for all the work to rebuild my motor, new pistons and rings, ported heads and intake, a valve job and whatever else is in a rebuild. Gaskets, waterpump, and anything they run into along the way isn't included. Which route would I be best with.

$5500 and no gaskets?
The best route would be one leading to a different shop.

I meant price wise. These guys know what they are doing. And I called them yesterday afternoon and gaskets were included. So was all the fluids. But would I be better to buy a long block and have the new heads port and polished as well as a valve job even though all valves are new, or just get a short block and use all my stock items, or just rebuild my stock motor? I'm not trying to drag it or anything, but if its going to have to be rebuilt anyway, why not do a few things that will get more out of the ol 5.4.

Well the first step I am taking is have a performance rebuild on my transmission. It includes a higher stall torque convertor and shift kit. Once that is out of the way I will move on to the engine as I figure out the best route.

Shop around, for that price you could buy a crate engine with a warranty

Your right, but it won't come with port and polished heads and intake. And an aftermarket cam. Dropped the truck off yesterday for tranny rebuild. I am going with a heavy duty torque converter, and a shift improver. I believe other than changing all the parts that are usually done in a rebuild that's all that will be different from stock.

If you're looking for performance, you will never find it in a crate engine. All they are is a worn engine that somebody else traded in and they rebuilt back to stock specs. You would be better off going with rebuilding the one you have now unless you just want a stock engine. Rebuilding it for performance will be expensive, but definitely worth it. Do you homework on it and talk with the shop about the best setup for what you want out of it.

Exactly. Which goes towards answering my main question of long block, short block or rebuild. So best option is to rebuild. Ok, and port and polish intake and heads, now what sort of cam should I go with that won't kill gas mileage, and should I mess with valves and rocker arms? This is my daily driver and 13 mpg won't kill me if get more out of the ol 2 valve 5.4

Truck transmission rebuild was complete today. I got a 18-2200 stall heavy duty torque converter, and a trans go shift kit. Everything else was oem replacement. Now on to getting the tune and building the motor.

I guess you guys don't know that crate engine can be bought in many forms... Stock, street/strip, and full on race, rated at just about any horsepower you want.

In fact my dad is about to buy a complete ( carb to oil pan ) 383 Stroker rated @ 420 HP and 450 ft/lbs, it also comes with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty.

Gotta shop around, that motor comes from Jeg's.

For your 2 valve 5.4 engine I would call and talk to Patriot Performance or Coast High, both of them can help you with the build, Patriot sells several ported heads and cams and more, Coast High can sell you a complete long block build to your specs, or just parts and advice.
