Hey, try surfing over to summitracing.com and look around, under exhaust. Not the best prices, but a good selection with pics that will be informative.
Shorties generally will bolt up without modifying the rest of the exhaust system and make 5-7 hp.
Long tubes will gain 25? hp, but will require a lot of other exhaust work which is costly.
You don't really need to retune for shorties, but should for long tubes.

It's all about creating the right amount of suction in the exhaust system to pull the gasses from the combustion chamber as efficiently as possible.
Short tubes are just that "short" which means they aren't changing very much. So you can just bolt them on and wonder why you spent so much money and time (or just money) to get 5 ponies.
Long tubes significantly change the dynamics of your exhaust. Which means for them to work properly you really need to change your entire exhaust and tune your engine to make best use of your headers. If done right you will get a much better return (in the way of hp and tq) but you also will have invested much more time and money.
Both will also change the exhaust note. Again the long tubes more so.

From what I know, you gain topend with headers, not lowend. So your 0-60 won't get faster, might even get slower but topend will be quick.

From what I recall (from my vette and gto days) long tubes will help on the low end through the mid range.
Shorties will take away from your low and add to your high. If you spend some time on the vette or gto boards you'll see shorties are frowned upon.

Shorties will scavenge more power down low. Longtubes will suffer a couple of HP down low, but, definitely the best bet. If you have the money, do the long tubes and a custom-fit stainless exhaust like Magnaflow, etc. all at the same time. I've been through too many 'exhaust experts' and spent a LOT of money only to be disappointed. Get somethig made for your specific truck model/type. Do your research and you won't be disappointed.
