Lifter Change out
How hard is it to change lifters in a 2002 5.4 triton engine? I have purchased a Haynes shop manual and they mention using a special tool called a Valve Spring Compression Hook, I have searched every auto parts store in my area and none carry them on loaner basis.
So can I somehow tie the cam chain in place with some wire and then take out link and remove cam? this would allow easy access to all the lifters and then replace cam. I know I would have to mark chain and cam to ensure i got it back in time, but is this practical method or is there easier way.

Best Guess:
The cam need not be removed to replace a "lifter". Compress the valve spring on the offending cylinder enough to remove the cam follower, then extract the "lifter" (actually lash adjuster).Perhaps other members have a better handle on this. How say you all?

I am changing them because I Have a constant "Clicking" coming form the engine, I first thought or was led to believe it was "Cam Phasers" but then found out that my truck doesnt have cam phasers.
I have checked for exhaust leaks and cannot find any, removed belt and ran engine to eliminate Water pump, changed plugs and one injector and coil, I do not have engine service light on.
So I am down to replacing lifters and have purchased the tool and lifters which should be at my house when I get home. ( I work overseas)
I have replaced oil & filter with correct oil and Motorcraft filter. so failing the lifter replacement to remedy this issue, I would hope its not cam chain but once I get home end of month I shall tackle this job and hopefully get rid of this annoying noise.
