How does the 4.6 compare to the 5.4?
So about a month ago I bought a 99 Ext. cab 4.6 4x4. I got it cuz it has lower miles (85,xxx) runs great and looks very clean, was 4x4, and cuz i needed something to drive. In the last week or so ive been kicking myself in the butt for not holding out for a 5.4. no real reason i guess, i just like powerful trucks. dont get me wrong i love my truck, but Ive never driven a 5.4 and heard there was like a 30hp differance for the '99 year. So I was wondering if theres a big differance in the throw you back in your seat and squeal the tires power, not saying i do that but its good to know you can. ha. and just overall performance in general. would it be a pretty hard build up for a 4.6 to match and/or exceed a 5.4? when finances let me i was gonna do a set of summit shorty headers, a cold air intake, and a throttle body spacer, but would it make more sense to just hold out untill i find a 5.4 to trade in for, or can you make the 4.6 perform just like or out perform the bigger bro?

This has been asked a million times. Just search 4.6 vs 5.4.
5.4 has more power. Better for towing. You can squeeze alot more power out of them rather than a 4.6.
To get a 4.6 to equal a stock 5.4, it doesn't seem cost effective. It can be done, but it costs a bit.
If your not in love with your truck, and you find a killer deal on a 5.4, go for it.

My dads 5.4L gets the same mpg as my 4.6L but I do have 22"s. Both 3.55 rear. I do notice how much more torque he has though it accelerates below 2k with ease.

A 5.4L has a longer stroke. Its peak torque comes in a thousand rpm sooner than a 4.6L.

My father has a 4.6, I have a 5.4. His truck picks up faster than mine, but I'd rather tow with my 5.4

YM 1999 5.4 was a dog engine and you bought the better engine with the 4.6. While there shows to be power differences between the two engines in the numbers advertised, the numbers are not real world. The 5.4 has never been a good engine and that's number one reason it's been modified to a 3V and now it's being replaced. It has always lacked power versus engines in it's class. It barely makes more power than the 4.6- remember, we are talking YM 1999.

My 01' 5.4L beats the balls off the stock 4.6L. I test drove them both and the 4.6 holds nothing to the 5.4L. On the highway I swear the trans never stopped shifting in and out of overdrive in the 4.6. The 5.4 is a great engine. There is a reason they used them in lightnings, 3/4 and 1 tons, and even the Ford GT. I have not heard they were replacing them. I know they are coming out with the 6.2L but i did not think they were giving the 5.4 the axe.

I read recently that FOrd is phasing out the current triton v8's with ecoboost v6's. They built a 32 coup for SEMA with a rear wheel drive ecoboost v6 in it. They are trying to get more mpg's out of it, and even more hp. My Mom in law has a 2010 SHO thats got 365 hp to all 4 wheels. It flies for a 6 lol
