slap in a 5.4 as I've done, there easy to find and all you really need to do is extend one wire and get a tune.

If your fine with a 4.6 I think you'll be looking for a motor from 98 or 99 to 2003. As long as is has COP setup and 2v it should be a straight swap. I'm sure someone else will chime in

2v is referring to the amount of valves per cylinder. the 97-03 motor is 2v. Your 2001 4.6 comes equipped with PI heads, cams and intake which is superior to the 1997 4.6 your mechanic sourced out. The 1997 4.6 is NPI and has lower power and efficiency ratings.

If it were me and I was shelling out for an engine swap I wouldn't think of downgrading. Just my .02$

Yea me too. Sorry if this makes you feel any worse but I drove my truck into the shop 5pm on a Saturday night (with the old 4.6 that didint have any oil pressure left in it) and drove out the next day 10pm on Sunday with a mint 5.4 installed and running.

it has taken me a day to take off the intake and had to make a tool to remove torque converter bolt is their a easier way to remove the motor ?

Well I had access to a complete shop with hoist, engine crane etc. I also didin't sleep that night just kept working away with a buddy. But we also had to assemble the new engine I had the shortblock assembled but the heads still had to go on and the cams needed to be timed.

The intake needs to come off for the engine to be removed. The torque converter bolts were a little bit of a pain but I had a wrench that fit and just had to have my buddy turn it over to exposed the rest of the bolts.

The stock 2000 exhaust manifolds where a write off after 240k so I just disconnected it from the y-pipe and pulled engine with the manifolds on.

Cant really remember any other big hurdles I had to overcome. But it was a good year ago now. The 4.6 computer ran the engine ok for cruising and regular driving wasn't going lean or anything but WOT was lean on the top end. I learned this at the dyno while making my baseline run, having a tune made for the new engine really improved things tho
