building a 351w torque engine
I have a 87 f150 4x4 with 302 that i am swapping with a 93 351w. I am going through the 351 and wanting to build a torque engine. Any ideals on how to up the tq? Would gt40 heads help or hurt? I know i can't do a cam because the SD fuel injection. Been thinking about putting carb on it but just don't yet. I am going to deck the block to get my quench pad right.

Im doin the same right now and this is my plan.
Keep the efi intake. The long runner design of the efi intake will make a much better power curve than a carb intake.
Use the stock cam with an adjustable timing chain set 2-4 degrees advanced to move the powerband lower in the rpm range.It wont make any more power this way but it will bring in the power you have quicker and make it feel much stronger at lower rpms.
Mill the heads to raise compression a little bit. 351's are less than 9.0-1 compression so a bump in compression to closer to 10.0-1 can be worth as much as 20hp/20ftlb alone.
Run headers with a free flowing Y-pipe into a large {3inch} single exhaust.Dont bother with duals as they actually hurt torque while possibly making a bit more horsepower at max rpm.A large single exhaust will have much better scavaging effects and flow much better helping low end power.
Underdrive pulleys to reduce drag on motor.
All other parts of the stock engine are fine for the rest of this build. Injectors and ecm included. This will not greatly increase airflow through the motor causing the computer fits,it will however maximize the power the engine is already making and move to a more usefull range. If possible I would look into a MAF conversion tho..
