#21
bad alternator?
i have the whine too..i have an 06 f150 and it only happens when its cold when its first turned on or when im around 55 mph or 65 mph sometimes 30..it seems like its tied to the rpms the truck is at...i've researched it a ton and a lot say its the alternator..a few even had the same and had it fixed after they changed out their alternators..im going to look into changing my alternator my self...anyone know any good sites that would guide me on how to change an alternator by my self? thanks

The alternator is on my list of things to check. Or change also. I'm eliminating the easiest things first tho. Someone had it go away after replacing a power steering pulley (sound remained even after replacing the entire power steering pump). So I'm gonna try the replacing the pulley without having to remove the entire pump to see if that fixes anything. I bought the pulley over the weekend and also bought a pulley remover tool kit to tackle the job. If this doesn't fix anything then the alternator is next. My whine is constant (as you can hear from my video I posted at the beginning of this thread. Will be doing this work on the weekend and updating my progress. Let me know if you guys get anywhere in the meantime.

there has, been a couple different threads around here on this. unfortunetly not much more than you guys have discused. but the list of possible includes:
idle pulley
tensioner pulley
altenator bearing
power stering pump
vaccum leak
A/C clutch fan
A/C compressor beerings.
for the record, I had the same noise and recently did a e-fan conversion. haven't herd it since, so the clutch fan may be something worth looking at.

The tensioner pulley was my problem. I had a definite whine- a horrible noise- changed the idler, and it was still there. While the engine was running I put a piece of rebar on the tensioner pulley swingarm, and all the other pulleys I could reach safely and put the other end up to my ear, and i could tell that what was making the noise. Also, when I removed the belt and spun all the pulleys, that was the one that seemed to be the problem. Quick fix. I've heard you can buy new bearings, but that was after I had ordered the whole unit. Either way, it beats taking it to the shop for 90 bucks labor.
This was on a twofiddy, but it's probably universal.

You may not have to remove your alternator. Get a mechanic's stethoscope and listen to your alternator while your truck is making the noise. You will be able to tell if its your alternator. This is hard to catch. Most people figure since the alternator is charging fine that its fine. I have had this problem myself. I hope this is problem. Its a easy fix. Let me know what you find out.

I get that same whine but only when in drive, when Im in neutral and rev the engine the whine disappears. Put it in drive and it comes back, and it doesnt make a difference if I'm in 2WD or 4WD hi or lo, its always there in drive..
Ill post what mine was when the dealer tells me and fixes it, mine is still under warranty.
