Issue: Is your F-150’s engine idling loudly?

The eight cylinder engines are notorious for this due to the cam phasers. For the unaware, cam phasers are responsible for adjusting the camshaft position to improve fuel injection into the cylinders, which leads to better fuel efficiency when idling and the ability to draw power from the engine more quickly. However, after anywhere from 60,000-100,000 miles, they also cause rough, loud idling due to wear and tear.

While the cause can typically be linked to the cam phasers, solutions to the problem vary widely. Some of the top recommendations include:

  • While the noise is annoying, the cam phaser itself isn’t actually breaking. If you can live with it, your F-150 will be fine.
  • If the truck is under warranty, bring it to the dealership.
  • It’s possible they may need to either replace the cam phasers, or even the cam phasers and camshaft as well.
  • Install a coil spring behind each cam phaser to reduce the rattle as it moves.
  • Swap the cam phasers from a larger engine so that it sits more tightly, reducing the rattle.

Read the full thread to find out which of these solutions is best for your truck.

Well they still have mine and it is day five today. I guess the valves didn't fix problem, or I would think I'd have it back for it was only supposed to be a 7 hour job. Called yesterday but no one returned my call. Fixing to call again. More later when I get some answers.

Yes I got my truck back the same way I left it. After talking to used car manager they took it back yesterday and they promised to replace camphasers and vct solenoid. Which after further investigations it is the vct solenoids that are fixing the desiring problems as well and it's only 140 in parts. Try that before phasers. Should fix problem.

Default Damn it man....

Update. so the dealer said they replaced camphasers and VCT solenoids, lifters, roller rockers, and still not fixed. Told me today they were going to be changing the timimg chain. They said they think it is slapping the cover, but that wouldnt make the deiseling noise would it? What else could it possibly be? I just about have a new engine.

Yeah, I would if I were paying for it. Unfortunately for the dealer I caught the noise the day I got it home, so all this is on there dime not mine. I guess since they cant figure it out motor change may be coming.

I am in NW FL. I was thinking if enough of us got together and got a class action suit against Ford, we may at least get a little help for repairs. I dont know to what extent the dealer is going to keep working on mine at there cost. If they dont get it right I am going to request a different vehicle.

First off I would like to appologize to everyone in here you all have been very helpfull and I know this isnt the place but I am tired of being taken for a fool by Ford and seeing everyone else having the same problems. I have emailed Ford and they where coward enough to have the local dealer call and tell me that they do not have any programs to help me with the finance charge for fixing the vehicle. Which I did not ask for that, I want them to fix there defective design at there cost and Body man count me in on that because I am getting no where with them.
