04 5.4 OIl leak..can't find
Ok I have a oil leak I can't find on my truck..but I think I may have mnarrowed it down.
I have a oil leak on my truck. It's not the front seal, timing cover. Its coming from around the oil filter but I can't see cause the front differential. I think it maybe the piece that the oil filter screws on too that bolts to the block..are these common too leak.

The oil filter or bolt itself could be stripped out no letting the oil filter seal properly. Id change the oil and check the bolt with a flashlight you should be able to see it.

Check that you dont have 2 oil filter rubber gaskets installed. Sometimes when removing an old oil filter, the rubber gasket sticks to the filter spindle assembly rather than coming off with with filter. Then when you put the new filter on (which comes with a new gasket on it) you have 2 gaskets.
Thus actually happened to me last oil change on my 5.4. I noticed before starting it up.
A long shot, maybe, but a cheap fix if thats it

Check timing chain cover at the point where the power steering pump bolts on. My bud hit a pot hole hard and a chunk of blacktop smacked the pump and put a crack in the cover. We thought it was filter related because that's where the oil was. Good luck. It cost him a cover at a staggering $1200.00.
