replacing starter motor
hi guys a newbee here. help please i have a 1996 F150 4x4 4.9 in line 6 cyl 160000 klm
how hard is it to change out the starter motor ,i have some mech exp ( not a lot ) is there any special tools or tricks to doing this job ,the local rip of garage just charged me $100 to tell me it was the starter,and wants $350 to replace it with a rebuild i don't have that kind of money ,but i have the time to try it myself,should i attempt this or give the guys my first born son,any help or advise will be appreciated ,i have the Haynes manual,but you never know what you might run into ,thanks guys

Do you know how to use a socket wrench?
If you nodded yes, then you can change the starter.
Re manufactured starters are normal and cheaper than new, but phone around and find out what the prices are like and then decide which way you want to go. Both will come with warranties.
A manual may help, but find the starter, disconnect the wires(mark them if you must to ensure you put them back correctly). Unbolt starter.
To install the new one....well, you see how easy it is.
Don't forget to unhook the neg. battery cable before you start.

thank you for the reply i was just scared i might get into something i could realy screw up ,thanks again ,i got a price of $ 170 for a rebuilt w/core, no one can get me a new one , does this seem reasonalble,even the ford dealer said they would use a rebuilt seems strange but maybe they want people to have to keep comming back,fisrt thing that has gone on the truck ,and i just found out the reason my Dear wife was using the truck for about 2 wks and the motor runs so quite when she was stop at traffic lights etc ,she thought the truck was stalled and was trying to start it while it was already running ,no more shall she drive my baby lol

Damn, that's a good one. My wife doesn't get to drive my truck either b/c she wasn't patient enough to wait for the high idle to go down before putting it in gear. Even funnier is that she would swear she was, but I caught her red handed too many times.
Tell your wife to just let off the brake or clutch, which ever it is and see it there is impending forward motion next time.

That hilarious....
Around here....there are just as many women driving trucks as men. Though in the summer they park them and drive bikes(Mostly Hogs)....and they're usually in the fast lane. No joke!...This is Quebec!
My honey is learning to drive......so naturally, I'm going to buy her a rig of her own...
