I have a 2012 STX with the 3.7 and am very pleased. I'm an average driver, no lead foot but don't mess around either. My truck has the power of a small V-8, but gets better mileage than the midsize trucks. Recently took a long road trip and averaged around 21mpg at 75mph with the a/c running. Not bad for full size extended cab 2wd. And can still fit people in the back seat if i moved all my junk out!

I am also very pleased with my 2013 F150 extended cab 4x4. I only have 9300 miles on it and its been a dream since purchase. I had a 5.4 with 187k... it only got like 10mpg.


The 3.7 feels just as powerful if not a little quicker than the 5.4. I haven't towed anything with it and only had a motorcycle in the bed. I am getting around 18mpg mix of city and highway. Not bad at all, I added a Truxedo Tonneau cover and Weather tech mud flaps to try and avoid the rust issue I had with the rear of my bed on my 03 5.4 Heritage Special Edition. It had minor rust bubbling on the rear underside/side of the bed.


I am spending $30-40 a week instead of $75-90. I don't regret buying the 3.7 one bit. I have the same power delivery, the truck picks up quicker and feels livelier than my old 5.4. Its a great motor and a great truck!

Hey all I've had my 2013 f150 xlt supercab 4x4 with the 3.7 for over a year now I bought it brand new I have put over 30k miles on it since average fuel economy overall about 18mpg I tow with this truck.... a lot! I've towed over 9k lbs curb weight with no problems whatsoever. I don't know if people are snobs about v8' s or just don't know what they are talking about, but this truck works it's *** off for me great ride good turning smooth shifting and a great exhaust tone from my homemade exhaust and intake make it perfect. I love the interior I have the upgrade screen and power every thing. I've never been stuck or stranded, if you are looking for a good truck at a good price forget the ecoboost and go with the 3.7!

when i owned my 3.7, regular cab but 4x4, i was doing mostly highway driving and averaged often up to 21 mpg. that was pretty good for such a big vehicle.

i sold it and now own a 5.0 SCab 4x4 which averages about 16 mpg no matter how i drive it. that's not too bad when compared to some other types of trucks.

Hello Everyone: Hoping I might get some quick feedback before I go out shopping tonight. I am contemplating on buying a 2013 F-150 that is a 3.7L V6. I wasnt too fond of the engine size but I am a little relieved since finding this forum. Can anyone tell me if its good? I live in San Diego where its usually pretty warm but I live in the mountains so drive up lots of huge hills!! We dont usually tow anything but it would on the random occasion have quite a bit of weight in the back if hubby's work truck breaks down ever... Can it handle hills? Does it have more power that I am thinking it does? I worry because my little Nissan Frontier 4x4 is a V6 4.0L. Will the F-150 be more powerful?

make sure to get one that has the towing package, so that you can get the select shift transmission. it really helps for uphill grades and keeping the revs in the sweet zone.

It's got 300hp, so it moves well. It will rev up when pushed, it really all depends how you feel about that. It has a lot or torque for a 3.7l V6. It's a great powertrain.

My 2012 STX in 2 wdr has 3.7 L motor that works well here in Alberta Canada of mixed flat lands and foot hils along the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

10 fill up average is 23 mpg Cnd, 19 mpg USA, or 8.1 kms/ pre liter.

3.7 L motor in front of 6R-80 six speed auto with 3.73 gears... Down sized tires to 255/60-17 which saves 6 to 7 lbs rotaing mass per tire,,, that's a huge savings.

Truck spends 90% of the time as a car at 5500 lbs or has small quad and out-back camp ing gear that adds up to 7000 lbs when loaded down. "All in weight."

I drive slow so smaller OD tires work for me as the 3.7 L motor works effortlessly staying in top gear that saves on fuel, it will shift down to 5th or 4th on the steep grades when needed.

Eastern Canada fuel prices jumped to $1.20 and $1.30 per liter as we see $1.05 here in Alberta,,, new carbon tax will claim more pocket funds.
National News center reports that Cnd fuel is closely taxed to 1/3 of sticker price up here in Canada.

Truck is needed for many tasks since we have things at the farm and oil/ logging jobs that come up for extra work.

My back seat is a full time sleeping system since I normaly travel long distances in America, so big savings living in truck and eating at food stores since hotels and restrunts burn up funds.

1 night out saves me $200 since hotles are pricey up here as well as restrunts, so those funds go towards gas on many trips with 4 wheel quad to explore areas.

2 wdr truck stays on hwys and good gravel roads to keep it clean and not wear it out by mud-bogging.

Frugal to buy used and cheap of fuel.

I have a 2012 Ford F150 extended cab, I have about a 50 mile daily round trip to work with a mixture of Interstate and city driving. I found the gas mileage acceptable for this size truck as long as I keep my foot out of it. I average about 18.5 to 19 mpg on a tank pretty consistently. On longer highway trips it will increase to around 21 to 22 if i keep the speed 70 or less. It will drop off of course with increased speeds. The truck has 165k and engine still seems strong and I hope to get another 100k from it. I personally like the engine and seems to pull moderate weight boat and trailers with ease. (5000 lbs or less).

The work truck I drive is a 2012 F-150 XL Standard Cab SWB 4x2 with the 3.7L V-6 engine; as of 10/10/2020 it has over 215,000 miles on it and the tailpipe still burns clean. I have to add 1 quart of 5W20 synthetic oil between the 5,000 mile oil changes. It has needed two water pumps so far, one at 120,000 miles and the 2nd water pump was replaced at 210,000 due to the engine idling 8 hours a day if not on the road.

The 6-speed transmission still shifts as it did when the truck was new and still with the factory filled transmission fluid.

There are two of these 2012 F-150's at the business I work at and they both were bought the same day, the other one only has 90,000 miles on it and never had a problem except had to replace the fan switch for air and heater, and that was a 5 minute job and cost $20.
