1997 Ford F150 engine rebuild kit help
Hi there!
I have a 1997 Ford F150 with 4.2L V6 engine that is smoking and knocking. I am going to rebuild the engine, but I don't know where to get the engine rebuild kit that is cheap and has all the parts that I need to change like gaskets and everything. I was going to order one from Ford, but I am really short on money and want to get it rebuild with the lowest cost possible. I am paying one of my friends who is a mechanic to help me with it because This is my first complete rebuild. Any links or help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

Try a good auto store, I prefer NAPA myself. Make sure to change the cyl head bolts, (not reuseable), replace bearings both mains and rods, have a machind shop install the cam bearings, new oil pump, replace plugs, t-stat, and water pump. I would also replace all hoses including heater hoses, any hose that can fail and overheat your new engine.

Im rebuilding mine as well, I found this kit a few weeks ago and is a great price. They also have smaller kits that are cheaper and sell all the parts individually.
Hope this helps!

Sorry to jump in but I just bought a 97 F150 with the 4.2L. There is water in the coolant but the compression readings are all between 185-200. Given the horror stories that I have heard about the head gaskets on this type of engine, is the Carter link above a good gasket set purchase?
