Would you consider a very clean 300k mile truck?

I would subtract what it would cost me for a good used engine and trans (not a reman or rebuilt) but at my own discresion. If it's as clean as you say, I'd give between 3 and 4, closer to 4 if it's indeed nice inside and out.. The garage kept vehicles adds major points because of the difference that can make under the truck and in the engine compartment. But I can also do everything myself. If you have to farm out an engine an trans install, it'll be very costly at the average rate.

But, at the same time, to buy a 5 yr old one with 100k miles would cost $20,000+ By comparison, an engine and tranny is dirtus cheapus. Fixing up older ones in good shape will always make sense because these hold up very well. At least where dont salt roads.

Salt yes, -very bad.

I took a tally earlier, wanted to see how much replacement metal for the truck was up in the rafters. I have both rockers, cab corners. Replaced both lower bed panels in the back, so I just need the front bed lowers and fab up some wheel wells for the bed.

KevH - Yea, sounds like a nice truck, should see what trans it's got in it, there's two auto's. As long as it doesn't have rust, it may be worth the effort. You definitely don't want my headache ailing yuh in the near future lol.
Pictures would help a lot. If you take some pics, post one of the drivers door tag. That will show the trans ident and a few other things.

1 1/2 years ago I recommended NO on a 285000 mile truck my son wanted to buy.
he had his heart set on it, so we drove it, twice, guy wouldn't budge on his price
$5000
my son bought it $5000
needed windshield and rockers/corners

today it has 320000 miles on it, runs great, does have some engine noise at idle but purs like a kitten at 85 on the interstate
only issue he's had was 1 bad coil pack and stuck thermostat
he got the windshield replaced for $180 and the rockers done by a body guy from local ford dealer for $1000
he drives it 70 miles a day round trip to work and back

it's not a perfect truck but you can't replace it for $6000, not as nice anyway

it's a 2003 screw 5.4 4x4 fx4
there is pictures on here he's user zebracakes

If the main replacement components (cooling system, including radiator, heater core, water pump, alt, battery, tires, brakes, ball joints/suspension, etc) have been replaced, and the engine/transmission checks out, then maybe you might want to buy it.

You didn't say what motor is in the truck. This might make a difference, since the rear end, transmission drivetrain depends on the engine. 5.4 has the hd transmission, where as the 4.6 has the 4R70W (electronic AOD), which is a bit less durable than the 4R100 (E40D electronic). The 8.8 used with 4.2 and 4.6 (common diff), is very good, but not as strong as the 9.75.

Everything is in play, so before making a $5000 mistake, look over the logs and go from there. Only you know what is going on, and asking us for help, without telling us what it really is (engine/transmission), 2wd or 4wd make a difference. If it's 4x4, then the TCase is mostlikely going to be one of the first things to check after the engine and transmission. At 300k, if 4x4, then the chain might be stretched to the point it may need replaced. Extra things to think about.
Most 5.4s have the 4r70w too man.

Not sure if the guys low balling the price understand the value of condition. Condition and mileage are equally important to determining value. I'll take a well maintained garaged truck with 300k on it LONG before I take a beat up truck with 150k on it for the same money.

Just because it has 300k doesn't mean you get it for peanuts the same way a truck with 95k on it with a rotted frame doesn't mean top dollar because its under $100k miles.

I agree with 5516. Condition is way more important than mileage. Sure am glad mine has never seen a MN winter. Vehicles rot before they wear out here. Seen and worked under plenty of less than 100K rust buckets here.

No rust on the body at all. No real rust on the frame that I could see either.

The door tag has "U" for transmission so that it's a 4R70W

I was just looking at a bunch of trucks in the LA area online and for what the OP's owner is asking, that is actually about middle of the road for California. I was shocked to see a load of 2002's over $7500 up to about $10k. A fair number had 180k miles on them, but a few were up in the higher mile range. For where he is at, that seems to be a fair price. Unbelievable the cost of used in that state for trucks. Cars can be had fairly cheaply, but trucks............ wow.

Jackedup....I forgot he had a 2002. I was thinking about my 98 w 5.4 and it's the hd version (E40D/4r100). My 4.6 has the 4r70w and is 4x4 and also a 98.

Sounds real good, wish I had the opportunity.

Good Luck!
