Question Why wont wheels fit?

I have 97 xlt . I bought some explorer wheels (or expedition) for it . They were 5 lug 16" 135 mm spacing. I took them to get installed today and was told they wont fit. My steel wheels use a flat lug nut. and the chrome wheels require an acorn nut. The wheel wont line up on the lugs and fit . The spacing is the same and I am unable to understand why they wont fit. The only difference I see is the chrome wheel lug opening is raised and my steel wheel is flat. Can someone tell me why they wont fit? I dont understand why they wont. The tire shop guy said the holes are different . Thats why they wont fit. That I dont understand. Thanks for the input .

because explorer wheels are a different bolt pattern, they have to be expedition wheels which are 5x135

Yes, Explorer and Expedition rims are different. The Expedition ones fit the F150's and Explorer's do not.

F150s lug pattern is 5x135mm
Explorer lug pattern is 5x114.3mm(or 4.5")

Why don't you see if a buddy has a die set and get some new lugs? I am not sure if that would work but it makes sense to me

do you guys think the probelm is that lug bolt size is 14mm, and the wheel is for the 12mm lug bolt, i dont think that would be the probelm but just throwing it out there
seeing how they switch lug sizes
