I'm new to these Triton engines......I been thinking....these guzzlers drink oil at an "acceptable rate" of a quart every 1000 miles...right?
So....why don't I just spin on a new oil filter every 3k miles and not bother draining anything? Seems like the most logical thing to do cuz if I drain the oil at 3k, I'm dumping practically new oil anyway!

I HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah as practical and good as it sounds and it probably would be just like draining the oil. I must say doing a complete oil change always feels better at the end.Even the beer in the middle while you "wait" for every last dop to come out...

Well I haven't done a oil change yet, just got mine. But don't they take about 6 quarts?
If so, then if you do a total change you are getting it a lot cleaner, and possibly draining anything else out, that couldn't just burn or whatever.

It's not acceptable to me!
In 88 my new F150 burned 1 qt. every 850 miles & Ford said it was "normal"...I didn't buy that & dumped it shortly thereafter. My 89 replacement didn't burn any in 6000 miles! Now that is acceptable! (The 88 was a true lemon & had too many things go wrong to count...major things!)

Oil consumption like that is normal. Most manufacturers say that. A friend of mine had a Honda that used quite a bit of oil and was told 1 qt in 750 miles is when they will start checking it.

oil consumption
Have a 2000 f150 with the 5.4, looses about half a quart every 3k miles but change the oil then so do not add any. Could just depend on the tolerances the engine was built to. Have an 03 mustang with the 4 valve and it does not seem to loose any oil, also has about 75k on it.
