Default wheel bearing failure

Just lost the front hub on my 2wdrive f150, luckly only going about 10 mph so no other damage. There was no front end vibration but did hear a squeaking noise for a few weeks prior and though it was the ujoints. The truck only has 75k miles on it. The shop that fixed it said they were not the original ford bearings and that it looked like there was plenty of grease, just bearing failure.

That's a bummer man, makes me think I should go take a look at mine, truck is coming up on 75K miles, and I know the previous owner did not take care of the truck like he should have. Glad to hear that there was no other damage!

yep overall still happy with the truck, got it a few years ago for $4300 with only 62k miles, xlt 5.4 supercab with factory tow package. The hub broke about 1/10th of a mile from the ford dealer so was able to drive it slowly there. total bill was $285 for all ford parts, new hub, inner and outer bearings plus seal and labor.

Wink

Mine were starting to make some odd noises too. Replaced both fronts this week. Sure seems like the stealer stuck it to you! Total parts cost for all my Moog parts (inner, outer, races & grease seals) ... $52!

yep the big expense was replacing the hub assembly $100 just for the ford part, bearings and seals for just one wheel ran about $55 then the labor was $119. I think they charge $60-$80 per hour. Also do not know if there is any difference between the ford parts and Moog but heard Moog are about the best you can get. Could have fixed it myself if I could have got the truck home. Overall feel like it could have been much worse, if it would have broke down out of town would have had it towed $$$.

Why does anybody even replace bearing races anymore... you can get an entire 2wd brake disc with races already pressed in for $50 each side. I went with National bearings, National grease seals, Motorcraft synthetic grease, and the house brand Advance auto brake discs with the races already pressed. The whole job was under $150 and took 2 hours in my driveway

I sure will miss cheap replacements like that, don't even want to know what the 4x4 will cost in front end parts

$100 bucks is still $100 bucks that I didn't spend and you did....That's why. Some of us are on very tight budgets and just don't have $100 to throw around.

took off the other wheel (one that did not fail) to inspect the bearings, still plenty of grease, looked like the outer was hot at one time also had play in it, replaced inner and outer and seal for around $40. Hub and spindle looked fine

You'll spend it down the road when you need new rotors because you cheaped out on the perfect opportunity to replace them.

Sounds like you might have caught this one before it went out on ya. Good thought to take a look at the other one and make sure it was in good shape.

When my vehicles have issues I'm always so glad I bother to pay for AAA, that tow service has been very handy on more than one occasion.
