Well, if both trannys will mate to the same engine, then there is obviously no fitment issues. Since they are both electronically controlled, the only issue I can see would be compatibility with the computer. I would also check drive shaft lengths.
As for how to tell them apart. It's not hard to tell them apart. Look at the pans.
Use the Google images tab and look at tranny pans for the two different pans(4R100 & 4R70W). You'll quickly see the difference.
You'll likely also notice that the 4R100 pan is the same as the E4OD and the 4R70W pan is the same as the AOD pan.
They're just different versions of the same tranny.
