What a good PCV system and 5W-20 will do

I appreciate the offer but I'm just going to stay stock for now, on the highway miles everyday right now anyway. Can't wait to see yours when you get all your plans done!

I have a '99 F-150, 4.6L and I believe it actually recommends 5/30 in the engine compartment and on the oil fill cap. I've read a couple of threads that make me think that 5/20 may be better, esp with spring right around the corner.

That's sort of the direction I'm leaning. With the higher mileage I figured the higher viscosity may help to keep the pressure up, but it seems like timing chains and valve train dies before the rings and bearings anyhow, and if anything, the higher viscosity would put more strain on those items. Thanks for the update and reply.

And this is why a properly functioning/designed PCV system is so critical. We tear engines down constantly and see the same results, and then take a ecoboost apart and are shocked by what we see as they only evacuate at idle and low boost causing the damaging combustion by-products to accumulate in the crankcase.
Here is a good training video on understanding the PCV systems functions:

Yeah when I pulled my 5.4 apart ready for machining it was brand new inside. No black crud or residue like you see in an old diesel.
Heck I run synthetic 5/20 and it comes out cleaner than when it went in.
