Default Truck won't start once it's warm...

2002 F150 SC 4x4

Truck starts right up when it's cool but refuses to start when the engine is warm. When running and it is warm, the truck idles very high. I've decided this is a cooling issue since my temp gauge is no longer working and the engine is running at such a high RPM. I've changed the coolant, changed the thermostat, and now I am getting the code that is indicating the coolant temperature sensor may be bad. That leads me to my question...

I believe the ECT sensor on my truck is in the side of the #7 cylinder inside the valley. Is this correct? It seems everyone believes it is in different places. Second, if correct, is there any way of replacing this sensor without removing the intake?

Not knowing what engine you have, I would think the sensor would be up front near the t-stat. Typically we want to know the temperature of the water leaving the engine. You asked for ECT for the computor, you are probably correct, others will verify. My retarded brain was thinking of the sender for the temp gauge.

Left that out, it's the 5.4.

To my understanding, the 2002 uses a Cylinder Temperature sensor and not a coolant temperature sensor. I'm mostly just curious if I can replace the sensor without removing the intake.

Too bad the good guys aren't on line yet. Are you sure the engine is comming up to temp, is the top hose hot? It probably is and that is why you want to change the ECT. Sorry for not knowing its exact location and if it is by #7, if it can be changed easily. Good luck, was try to help.

I appreciate the help. The engine is coming up to temp, it just is running as if the computer believes it is cold all the time, hence why it is staying reved up so much. (at least that's why I think it is at such a high RPM).

I can see the sensor, its to the right of the alternator around the #7 cylinder. It's impossible to get to unless you have the hands of a 2 year old.
