Default truck is stuttering

I have a 2003 f150 2wd and for the last few weeks i have had problems with it stuttering and missing especially on take off and around fifty five. howevery, it is not doing it when its idle. Also, i notice that it did not do it when it had a low tank of gas that sat without running for a week.. Has anyone else had this problem? I think i'm dealin with a fuel filter issue maybe, if you have any suggestions let me know. thanks

If you have a 5.4, I would say that you have a COP that's going bad and hasn't been detected by the misfire monitor yet.

Nate, my '02 5.4 two wheel drive that I just got stutters sometimes when accelerating going up a hill. It only did it two times on a 1200 mile trip I just did. I have only had it two weeks, so taking it to the dealer today for him to fix the remote mirrors for the second time, and tell him about the stutter problem. A friend told me he thought it was the COP also (cop = coil over plug, for those, who like me, don't always get these acronyms).

I don't know if this will help you or not

http://www.f150online.com/forums/tra...s-low-rpm.html

Notice that these people say a "shudder" and compare it to "rumble strips".
If that is what you mean by stutter, you may want to consider.

This is what my '99 F150 5.4L did.

A couple say COP and a couple (including me) say the transmission fluid change. I based mine decision on another thread written by a Ford mechanic who was a transmission specialist.

Mine had 66K and when I broke the tranny open I could tell it had never been done (factory plug in bottom of pan).

After draining pan, draining the torque convertor (definitely do this), radiator and replacing filter I put new fluid in (synthetic) and there are zero problems. It even eliminated the overdrive "lurch" coming off a hill in cruise control that someone said was natural in F150's.

Good Luck

Default shutter problem

I have owned an 02 expedition and an 02 fx4 and they both had this problem shuttering up a hill If you check your coil over plugs they get hot and burn out they cost about 50 dollars a piece. I have changed random ones in both trucks and it fixes the problem. The problem is just figuring out which one it is.

I'm with gem on this one. My '98 F150 4x4 with 4.6L had done this off and on for some years. I finally read about it in this forum and had my tranny fluid changed and the mechanic also added a bottle of Shudder Guard. These shudders that I used to feel going up hill at a moderate acceleration disappeared.

I don't think it's the tranny because i can feel the miss while idling sometimes. I put it on the computer and it did not detect a miss. But then again the check engine light has to be on to shoot out a code. Thanks for all your guys input but i think it is one of the cop's because it's only between certain speeds and rpm's which tells me it's lacking fire on certain cylinders. Could be wrong though.

I am very familiar with your symptoms. I bought my truck when it had 150K miles on it and have had it for a little over a year. Have had to replace 3 COPs so far. I need to find out which ones I need and get them from eBay instead of the local Autozone.

Here's a different idea what about the Iac valve? I had a similar sounding problem and a friend suggested that I take the Iac valve off and clean it. I did and the problem disappeared. Might not be your problem but it's a cheap test.
