Default Truck makes a weird ticking sound when I accelerate

Hey everyone, I am new to this forum and I recently bought a 2001 F150 supercrew 4x4. I got it cheap and I have fixed everything besides a weird ticking noise when I accelerate. When the truck is idiling it is fine but when I accelerate the ticking noise starts. It also gets louder when I hit the gas harder. If I am at say 65 mph and on cruise it seems to not make the noise. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

yea that sounds like it is most likely an exhaust leak. I have the same thing going on except I can hear it even at idle. I am guessing you cant hear it when you are up around 65 just because the engine, wind, and road noise covers it up. Check the bolts on your exhaust manifolds and all the piping leading up to your y pipe to see if anything is loose.

could be that or that is exactly what happened to mine before the spark plug ejected from the engine ... both times.... tick tick.. boom.

I had a similar experience, tick tick and like he said boom. Mine started out small, and would go away when when it warmed up, then it stayed all the time then finally one morning it went. I have a similar noise now from the other side but since I replaced all the spark plugs and stuff I am thinking now it may be a lifter. Ticks when cold but goes away when the engine warms up.

I have the same problem on my truck I can only hear it sitting in the driver side though so I'm pretty sure is an exhaust leak. The dealership I bought it at put a new driver side manifold on and I'm guessing they did a bad job

I would put money on it being spark plug blow by. I had that problem right before mine blew out. I only heard it on one side because it was only one plug. I would start it, climb up in your truck and feel around the plugs for any blow by. You could also take and make a bottle of "snoop". Its just a spray bottle with soap and water in it. Spray it around your spark plugs (not a lot) and if there's anything blowing by it will create big bubbles and you'll see the leak.

Thanks for all the help and great advice!
I have been looking at it closely and it sounds likes some type of leak but it comes from the top of the motor. It is very faint and gets worse when I accelerate. I dont know if you can have some type of exhaust leak out the top. I'm not the most technically savy but I do all my own work.

could be spark knock.... are you throwing any codes?? get bad gas somewhere??...

make sure its not a lifter or something major clean fresh oil.... how many miles...

really sounds like an exhaust manifold leak in my opinion... start it up and have someoen block the exhaust off... see if it gets louder... (dont block it off but for only a few seconds)...
