Default Transmission woes

Dear F-150 owners,
-My pickup was parked and hit in the rear axle in January. I had to have the axle replaced as well as the leaf spring to frame mounts.

-I finally received the pickup back and now when the trans is in Drive it will not shift up until the rpms reach 2500 rpm and it is a hard shift. Also the speedo does not work.

-Check engine light also came on with code P0500 vehicle speed sensor. All looks hooked up unless a cable plugs in to the sensor at the transfer case.

Thanks in advance

Changeing the speed sensor would be the first thing I'd do. When that is done, your speedo should work, and it may or may not fix the hard shifting issue.

-Just changed out the transfer case VSS and still no change.

-Hmm, can't be that hard since all was well until the truck was hit in the rear.

-Since the axle was replaced, does it have anti-lock/speed sensors on it?

Yep that is what I am thinking too.

-I wonder if the drive shaft was pushed deep into the T-case and misaligned something.

-I did note the VSS gear was pushed back onto the VSS a bit when i removed it.

Thanks,
Don

Checked the voltage at the ABS sensor and Transfer case VSS connectors.

-ABS- 5 volts even with ignition off.

-VSS- no voltage with ignition off and on.

-Wiring harness?

Thanks

OK just put the VSS on a voltmeter and spun it with a drill and it puts out voltage.

-So I have to guess it is something inside the Transfer case.

-Does anyone have a good breakdown of the T-case where the VSS gear meets with another gear?

Thanks, Don

The speedo drive gear was in 6 pieces so I replaced it, but there was a rubber cushion type item that goes between the gear and driveline shaft.

-is that what keeps the speedo drive gear from backing out since there is only a small ball bearing that holds the gear in position but does not secure it.

Out of curiosity, is there an insurance company involved? If so, I'd stop screwing with it. Take it back to the shop and tell them it ain't right and make 'em fix it. It's on the insurance companies' dime so let the pros make it right.
