Question Transmission Problems

I know a guy with a 2002 Ford F150 4WD with a 5.4L. Something in the transmission went wrong and now it only has reverse. Besides from that, it's a pretty decent truck and I could get it for a good price. What do y'all think is wrong with it? If we buy it, then I do plan to do all the work myself. I have the means to take the engine out, etc.

Thanks

You don't need to pull the engine to take out the transmission.

You can put a junk yard transmission in and be on your way for less than $500. Or pull it yourself, have it rebuilt, then re-install yourself. Would be $600-1000. Otherwise you can bring it to a shop and they'll do it all for ~$1,800-2,800.

Or if you repair the transmission yourself, you're only out the cost of parts.

Alright, thanks for the info. 500 dollars would definitely be worth it.

If you really want to do it yourself: https://www.monstertransmission.com/...eSubCat_5157_1

I've seen the 4r70w rebuild manuals at books a million & on ebay for about $25-30.

$300? Wow.

I was quoted $1200 just to remove and install a different one that I provide.

I could do a 3k mile round trip down there, spending $400-500 in gas if I averaged 14mpg. And still come out ahead.

Not with a bum transmission though I suppose.

The shops charge book time and labor is anywhere from $70-100 an hour. It's a 8-12 hour job depending on which "book" they look at.
