Default Transmission Cooler

I'm considering a
Tru-Cool Max LPD4739 4739 40,000 GVW Low Pressure Drop Transmission Oil Cooler with Thermal Bypass Tru-Cool Max LPD4739 4739 40,000 GVW Low Pressure Drop Transmission Oil Cooler with Thermal Bypass
from Amazon for $162 but I'm wondering a few things.

Is the Thermal Bypass is needed?

I'm also curious about the "Low Pressure drop" advertising in the title. Would there really be much pressure drop in any aftermarket radiator if you're not adding other things like a filter and tons of extra line?

Would a smaller 27,000 max tru-cool be an equally adequet cooler for a half ton truck?

I had B&M's in my Novas and they worked just fine those never lugged around the weight of a truck and its haul.

Why not use the same super duty cooler krack did? I think he got a 40* drop in temps all around and pretty much fit without any custom brackets.

With you wanting to use it off road for extended amounts of time I would maybe go bigger than that one you posted.

Default Transmission Cooler

I found the one From Amazon only because of searching the boards but I didn't see Kracks thread.

The cooler I listed is a Ford used cooler but I'm not sure of the application. (I'm on my Istupid device so I can't reference the details in this reply.

The one used on the 7.3 and v10 superduty is the exact same cooler with just brackets. The thermal bypass is only need in cold climates. If you keep the fluid running thru the radiator you wont need the thermal bypass. You can also buy it directly from tru cool. I have the same cooler. But i don't have trans fluid routing thru the radiator first. I can tell you with a quality fluid such as Amsoil or Valvoline syn ATF your around down temps will be in the 140* area, and around 170* while towing which is around 45* degrees cooler than factory. If you decide to use the thermal bypass and not let the fluid route thrum the radiator you will need to get a custom trans tune to correct shift pressures to the cooler temps. Charlie_Dyal can attest to that based on how firm my truck shift before correcting them due.

I'm glad you posted that in time. It's probably best that I use the cooler without the bypass and keep it routed through the engine radiator.

Admittedly I was tempted to go with a Dorman unit for $59 but we've all seen the quality that comes out of Dorman most of the time and this is too vital a part to break when you're doin work.

If you need to see how I mounted mine, I can take some pictures. I would advise to keep as far away from the air flow for the A/C condenser. Mine is mounted right in front of the condenser. In stop and go traffic m a/c doesnt cool as well untill it gets moving. The cooler does a great job at removing the heat, but will cause heat soaking with low air flow.

Thanks that would be great whenever you got around to it.

I ended up ordering the cooler only without the bypass for a total of $130 with free shipping and no tax. (I love Amazon Prime more than I like my sisters husband.)

I wouldn't run my lines thought the radiator...

It's actually to warm up your transmission to operating temperature, not a cooler.

When I upgrade my radiator and Fans, I'll think about re-routing but this keep it simple approach also assures I don't have to worry about screwing with my tunes. When I'm up in the mountains it will help to preheat the trans fluid even though I don't so much need it here in Virginia.
