Default Transfer case leaking fluid, uh oh.

Rear end went out a while back, caused the entire drive train to freeze up at 35 mph. I replaced the rear end, and $600 later it runs fine. 4x4 works fine, but the transfer case is leaking fluid on my drive way.

My question: Was a seal broken? The truck drives fine with no noise or anything, but fluid is slowly dripping on my driveway. I really do not want to buy a new transfer case if i dont have to, or take it to a shop and pay them $200 to tell me i have a $2000 problem. Has this happened to anyone else?

2002 fx4, 5.4 91,000 miles.

Its the lip seal. Should be replaceable. You are supposed to replace them when the driveshaft is removed. They get brittle and break.

Judging by the pics in www.rockauto.com it looks like it is a simple lip seal. remove the old one with a heal bar or screw driver and tap the new one in.

Transfer case fluid leaks due to a wear-through on the rear case half, some manual shift transfer cases have developed leaks due to the internal fluid pump flange wearing a hole through the rear case half. If not caught before a leak develops, the transfer case could suffer complete failure due to a lack of lubrication.
