Guys, my son has a 4.2L V6 and we want to replace the plugs in it. We started to remove one or two and started to get a lot of resistance. I just want to be perfectfly sure that i am not doing anything wrong! Can someone please tell me why they dont seem to be loosening up and confirm that they do remove by turning them counter-clockwise? This is fustrating!

Have you used any penetrating oil like Deep Creep?

Pretty sure the removal is counter-clockwise.

Haven't kept up with the newer engine offerings - if the heads are aluminum, my experience with other motors is that it typically requires the engine to be cold for plug removal without thread damage.

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't used penetrating oil yet but will pick some up and try to spray it on the threads. And yes, I did try to loosen them while the engine was cold.

I would suggest spraying some penetrating lube on the plugs to make removal easier and yet, you do loosen them by turning them counter-clockwise (they dont have reverse threads).
It might simply be that they are somewhat locked-in by the oxidation and thats why they are hard to remove.

Haven't heard of issues with the 4.2, v-6 engine. Is the plug hard to turn after initial seating has been broken? If its the initial resistance is what is of concern try using a longer breaker bar. If after the plug is broken loose from contact and still hard to turn, then the penetrating oil would be of help. Good luck and get back to us.
