Default Steering question?

Chasing a front end clunk along with steering wheel creaking and I find that I can grab my intermediate shaft going from the firewall to the steering gear box and it has some nice play....what is my next move guys does the whole shaft need to be replaced or is it something simpler?

Thanks for your help

So I have all new front end parts, (just did upper ball joints yesterday). Everything is tight, and I still have a creak in the wheel when I turn. Anyone else victim to this? Anybody have wisdom to spare here on what the heck it could be....Appreciate it!

The creak is usually lower ball joints. Are yours greasable?

yeah they are and all of my tie rods ball joints are greased. Could the creak be the steering gear? All I can really narrow it down too....

is this veh 4wd? If it is, does the creaking occur only in a turn while you are moving or is does it creak when you are stationary as well? If it is creaking while you are moving only and it is 4wd the CV shafts are the only thing I can think of.

For what it's worth - My creaking sound in steering was the upper column bearing going bad. Noisy for some time and finally the ball bearings fell out causing a lot of side to side play in steering wheel. If yours is the same be sure to order the bearing, spacer, spring and "C" clip. Mine came from Rockauto.

This may not be your problem. Also the lower steering shaft may have some side to side play. If the steering wheel turns smoothly from stop to stop I doubt the shaft is bad.

Just my two cents and good luck!
