Default Starter or Start Solenoid

I know it isn't the solenoid on the firewall. It is either the starter solenoid or the starter....

So the question is.... Do I replace the starter or gamble with the starter solenoid?

Isn't the solenoid inherent to the starter?

Based on the limited info and having just one hour ago emerged from under my 99 4x4 scab after changing the starter, I'd say replace the whole assembly. When I priced the solenoid it came in just $50 under a new starter which includes the solenoid. BTW, that top bolt is a PITA! My .02Cdn.

I replaced the whole deal... It was $104.00 with my friends discount. For the two side bolts, I used an air ratchet with a three inch extension. I used a six inch extension for the top bolt. Easy in, easy out.

I did have a bad positive terminal that I had to remove and replace.

It sounds like you have a 2wd...not so easy with a 4x4 and I had to do it with hand tools. I did the job at home and the shop with all of my air tools is a few miles away from there.

Agreed. I replaced mine last year and that top bolt is a pain. I used 2 short extensions because I didn't have a 6" one. Even at that the ratchet would barley clear the end of the starter. If I remember right there isn't that much room left to use a longer one.

Nope, I have 4 wheel drive.... I also have a lift I can use whenever I want.

I used two three inch extensions because a 6 inch was a hair too long.

No joke, used a small 3/8 air ratchet and she was on and off without any major problems other than the positive end at the starter being half way worn off.
