Default Speedometer Quit..

Ok.. My speedometer just decides to quit the other day. My 98 scab has the 4.6 and I am getting code p500 on my tuner which says vehicle speed sensor (VSS) error. I have replaced the trans sensor, as well as the tailshaft sensor. I havent replaced the ones involved with the ABS as the ABS light hasn't come on.

Anybody have any other ideas? I don't mind a few bucks for the sensors. But, I dont really want to have to shell out the $$ to play the swap game with the GEM or the PCM.

it could be the speedometer gear inside the extension housing on the transfer case (tail shaft housing) it could be all apple cored and worn down thus not sending the right signal or no signal thru the vss very cheap and easy to replace

It looked pretty nice when I changed the VSS (the truck came from an older fellow and only has 62k on it) but maybe I should go ahead and change the gear. Couldn't be more than a few bucks. Thanks!

are you talking about the gear on the vss or the gear on the transmission output shaft. im talkin about the one on the output shaft is the one that gets worn out

Oooo.. No I was talking about the one that slides onto and clips onto the end of the VSS itself. I better go look at that one. I just got done checking the wiring, and I have continuity all the way to the speedometer. Sooo, if that isnt it, i'm lost. The way I am reading the schematic, the GEM uses a signal from the VSS, but doesn't actually control what goes to the speedometer, nor does the PCM. Sooo, I am ruling them out..

ok.. so I have continuity all the way from the VSS to the GEM. and from the GEM up to the speedometer plug.. I took the old VSS (since it doesnt appear that was the problem) plugged it in its harness, put it in my drill to simulate its turning, started the truck and put it in drive, STILL no action on the dash...

Do you have a salvage yard at your disposal? If so I would be getting a used GEM and gauge cluster.

Oh I meant to tell you earlier, Super troopers is a great movie.

Yea.. I do. I found a GEM on ebay with the same part number as mine. Thought about going ahead and trying it.. Guess if thats not it I could always put it back on there... I am sure the local yard prob has a cluster tooo..

Yes.. Supertroopers is the bomb!! lol
