Default Speedometer Calibration on 1997 F150

Hi I am doing a gear swap from 3.08 to 3.73 gears in my 1997 F150 4.6 4X4. I know the speedometer isnt electronic and I cant change it with a programmer. I heard it was cable driven and there is a gear in the transfer case. Is this true, and if not how do I change it.

Scroll down to # 82.
The Vss gear is on the drivers side of your trans toward the mid/rear, a bracket with a 10mm bolt holds it in place, unbolt and pull out being careful to not damage the O ring. Count the teeth on your gear and multiply by 1.2 to get a closer gear count.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd add to your thread(just in case someone does a search like I did) that if someone were to order a vss gear on fordparts.com you can pick it up at your local dealer with no shipping fees. I just paid $4.04 for an 18 tooth gear part # C7SZ-17271-C for an auto tranny. Took 5 min to change with 7/16 wrench and needle nose pliers. My truck has a 3.55 with 285/75/16's. My door says original tires were 235's.
Here are part numbers:
16 Blue D0AZ-17271-A
17 Green C7SZ-17271-A
18 Gray C7SZ-17271-C
19 Tan C7VY-17271-A
20 Orange C8SZ-17271-B
21 Purple D0OZ-17271-B
