Default Speaker upgrade questions

Hey guys hope this hasn't been asked to many times. I'm looking to upgrade my front door speakers in my 2002 XL. I have a Sony head unit installed and currently a 10 inch Rockford Fosgate sub. The sub is one that was made with the amp enclosed in the box so I don't think I could use it for anything else. My question is will the headunit provide enough power for new speakers? The ones I am looking at are JBL GT7-86. 2 way with 60 watt rms and 180 peak. The stock radio supplied something like 70 watts or is this incorrect and should my new head unit provide around the same ? Thanks for any help!

Upgraded head units almost always provide more power to speakers. For what you're trying to do should work out perfectly.

If im looking at the correct model its listed at 52 watts max that means rms will be closer to 20. Look for some speakers that have an rms rating no higher than 30.

You will be fine. After market hu have enough power to power just about any door speaker. It won't be at the max production. But it will power them and sound better than stock.

Okay if it's at 52 max don't u just divide it by square root of 2. To get about 37? Or am I missing something else. So I know for say an amp and a sub if the amp can support to low of a power than its starts clipping correct? Does this also hold true for the inboard amp of the hu and speakers? Will I damage the speakers if I get these. Or is it safe to have these until I get a new amp in the future?

There really isnt a true formula to figure rms from max rating. If you are getting over 27 I would be really surprised. You can probably get away with it but you wont get the most out of them until you add that amp.

Default

RMS can only be determined by input volts. Its not that simple. Stock headunit put outs about 12w rms.
