Ah now I know what you guys are talking about, when you were saying keys, I thought you were just talking about the long rod you use to turn the winch for the up down of the spare, I don't have a key in my 98, you just insert that rod and turn, and yes you can squeeze a 3/8th drive in there but not a 1/2". I was able to disasemble 2 of the winches to make one good one, installed it last night and works perfectly, now no more spare in the box!!!! But on a side note, the used winch I bought was from a 99 and the inside had differences from my 98 winch, one of the gears and some of the plastic parts were different!!

the thing to do becuase i had a problem trying to get my tire down. the pastic tube that hooks to the part that has the cable inside remove the plasitc tube by pulling it off and then after getting that off you wil see the key way thing in there and you can got take a small flat head screwdriver and the key thing will pop out and then you wont need to use that key much eaisier and more reliable.

Easy fix, just did this last week on the 02 F-150 I just bought... Where that McGaurd Key lock is, get down there...
Easy with the tire off, pull the plastic tube off with pliers
Grab the locking key thing with a pair of strong pliers or vicegrips, I used channel locks.
Pull the locking key out of the end, it's only held in with a small thin metal clip.
Now the end of your jack handle will fit in there. If someone wants your spare tire bad enough, they're going to get it anyway... Those locks just corrode so bad you can't hardly connect the key to it anyway...
This job took me all of 5 minutes last week to do, 10 if you count hanging the spare back up..
A bit more involved if the tire is still hanging and you can't get to the mechanism...
