Default 02 Gas MPG Improvement

Hey Everybody,
I have a 4.6L F-150 super cab Sport with the posi track rear end. I have a K&N air filter in it and would like to do some minor modifications to it that will improve the MPG and performance without breaking the bank. I have been thinking about a cat-back exhaust upgrade or a chip upgrade, but I want to be sure that I am not sacrificing reliability. Normally I use it on the weekends nowadays, but lately the wife has been using it a lot since somebody did a hit and run on my daughter's car and she is using my wife's so the gas bill is larger than normal. Any help is appreciated.

Basic Maintnance, fuel filter, clean MAF, keep tires inflated. That's what will help the most

Actually getting rid of the K&N filter will help more than anything. Try finding a dry element filter. The oil in the K&N will get pulled into the MAF and over time will cause a drastic change in performance and fuel mileage. I have seen long term fuel trims over 30% with a K&N.

Sct tuner and an e-fan conversion are the two things that I personally noticed that helped the most. I have a K&N cai and didn't really notice much from it, although I've had it on for 1 1/2 yrs and have noticed no issues either. My fuel trims stay right at 1.04 to 1.07. I've never seen problems with Them unless they are over cleaned and oiled.

It's crazy how many threads pop up on the same subject every single day.

There isn't a mod in the world that's worth what it cost to save fuel. I always tell people NEVER mod for mpg, mod for power, sound or simply because you want it but never mpg!

If I told you a programmer($450) will give you 2MPG.

Let's say you have a 26 gallon tank.

That's boils down to <52 more miles out of a tank.

So let's say 2.5 gallons a tank you gain.

At $3.05 a gallon you get an extra $7.625 worth of gas out of 1 tank.

$450/7.625 = 59.01

It will take you 59.01 tanks of fuel to even BREAK EVEN with what you paid for the programmer!!

59 tanks X 400 miles per tank = 24K miles to even break even!

That's just my 2 pennys.

Wayne

I agree for sure with what Wayne says, I did my mods for performance. I've had 3 10th gens and they are big heavy trucks nothing you do is going to make a big diff in mpg. Build it for fun or leave it stock and maintain it.
