slave cylinder replacement?

slave cylinder replacement?
I have a 2004 F-150 Heritage which I believe is the same as a 2003 F-150. I believe my clutch slave cylinder is leaking. Since it's internal I think the tranny has to be dropped. How much is this going to cost me? Should I have the clutch replaced at the same time? It's got 60,000 miles on it. Also any suggestions on where I can have this done the cheapest? I heard transmission shops may give me a better price. I appreciate anyone's input. Thanks

Ah, the old leaking slave cylinder trick
If your slave cylinder is leaking, then yes, tranny removal is the only way. If you are not handy under the hood, I don't sugest you try it. It's not something you want to take on in your driveway. And if you've ever worked on a hyd clutch before...forget what you know. Ford over engineered this one. Hopefully I've talked you out of doing it yourself.
A good shop will probably charge you in the relm of $500.00-$600.00. Starting to think about doing yourself again aren't you? Don't do it, unless you have a couple of guys to help you, level ground, and full reserve of cuss words. Mechanics earn every penny of that job.

I took it to a shop. I know a guy that works there. I had a clutch kit installed since the transmission was already out for the slave cylinder. Total with tax was $873. He said the clutch kit was $399, I don't know if that included labor or not but I hope I got a decent price, I think I did

I Voted For Bill and Opus
I would have done it myself but I have the experience and the equipment. If you are not sure of what you are doing you are better off paying to have it done. You made a wise choice.

I was charged about $100 for the slave cylinder, 3 hrs labor @ $90/hr, $399 for the clutch kit, no extra labor, and $20 for an oil change, and the rest was taxes, environmental fee and whatever else, I also got another $10 off so it was $863. They got it done quick and they seem to have done a good job. It hurts the pocketbook a bit but I couldn't have done it myself. Even if I could, I wouldn't have gotten it done as quickly as I needed it. Thanks to everyone for the input so I didn't get screwed.

Good Deal.
That sounds great! Glad your back up and running. If you get a chance to help a buddy do one of those, I would jump on it. There always an advantage to having been and done that. That alone can help prevent the perverbial screw.
