Or, if you wanted to go all out, you could get some good long tube headers, and have all new exhaust run from the collectors back with some high flow cats and a good free flowing muffler as well.

I do like these suggestions but I have a flowmaster 40 on my truck it sounds nothing like you describe it to be. I am running a flowmaster 40 single in dual straight out the back with 4 inch tips and it sounds like a hoss, no drone in the cab but you can tell its there when you give her a little bit of throttle. Mine is a 4.6 though.
