You could just throw a good free flowing muffler on it to replace the stock one, get a good one like a magnaflow or a borla or likewise. Stay away from flowmasters because they aren't free flowing with their internal baffles, which doesn't help any and it just sounds like a bunch of tingy metal.

Or you could go and have the factory y pipe cut out, and get an x pipe put in its place and run either two single in/out mufflers (also free flowing) or get a good dual in/out muffler like magnaflow #11386

Or, if you wanted to go all out, you could get some good long tube headers, and have all new exhaust run from the collectors back with some high flow cats and a good free flowing muffler as well.
I do like these suggestions but I have a flowmaster 40 on my truck it sounds nothing like you describe it to be. I am running a flowmaster 40 single in dual straight out the back with 4 inch tips and it sounds like a hoss, no drone in the cab but you can tell its there when you give her a little bit of throttle. Mine is a 4.6 though.

Yeah it may sound good to some, but you don't get the full potential out of having an after market muffler with a flowmaster. The baffles they have inside of them keeps you from having a free enough flowing exhaust to have any kind of increase. Besides sound and a metallic rattle. Plus I see flowmasters rusting the hell out a lot worse than most other brands. But that also has to do to the conditions the vehicle was/is in.
