Default -10* and no heat. help

Hi guys, I have reached the breaking point. My feet almost froze off last night. My truck is a 2000 f-150 5.4 v8 extended cab with 143000 miles on it.

My heat is throwing no heat what so ever. The blower blows on all levels high-low. It also changes from defrost, heat, feet, and panel. The only problem is the truck will throw no heat.

Any ideas on what it could be before I spend $1000 to have someone fix it?

Could it be the thermostat, heater core? Any ideas are appreciated.

Could be a thermostat stuck open, or a plugged up heater core.

My Dakota plugged the core up pretty bad. After fighting and fighting it,I finally cut both heater hoses running to the core, and stuck the nozzle of a pressure washer into the return line from the core to backflush the core of any debris.
I simply patched up the hoses with 2 nipples and clamps.

It worked great, but there is a chance you could blow the heater core apart.
Mine was so plugged up that the return hose was actually dry inside.Nothing inside the hose but dried up rust scale. I'd imagine the core looked the same.

Does you engine heat up to the normal 190 or so range? Or does it stay at 140 or so? (sign of a stuck thermostat).

Sounds like the infamous blend door breaking problem. Search the forum and you will find numerous postings of this problem, and the different ways that people have fixed this problem, without removing the dash completely. Good luck.

If the engine is reaching normal temp, place your hands on both heater hoses. They both have to be hot to touch. If only one is hot the heater core is plugged up. If both are hot, then check the blend door as previously stated.

Good Old Bill is right. I would check the hoses. If good you may need to replace the blend door. I would also recommend a coolant flush and new thermostat.

First check your temp gauge to see if it reads in the middle when it should after running for a while.
Most likely it is the thermostat stuck/broke open.
Count your blessings.
I was in the middle of nowhere in a Dodge truck at night and had no heat so the windows kept freezing and I had to drive with the windows down so I could see where I was going. I almost froze to death. Replaced the thermostat and I was back in business.
Replace the thermostat first before you waste a lot of time and money on anything else.
My 97 F150 has given me no problems at all so I have to rely on experiences with other vehicles.
What a great truck.

temperature gauge is perfect. right where it should be. today i grabbed the hoses i believed were the ones that come and go from the heater core. it felt like there was something stuck in the hoses. like how ice feels inside a garden hose. Im going to cut the hoses tomorrow and put a hose with light pressure threw them. if that does not work i will try the thermostat then the blend door.
