Default Scary windshield wipers at high speed

I usually drive my 1998 F150 around town, but the other day I got on the highway in a heavy rain, and discovered that my wipers do not work correctly at highway speeds. I got home by sticking my arm out the window and using my hand as a bumper to stop the wipers and send them back the other way, otherwise they would shoot past the outside edge of the windshield and not go back!
Needless to say, this was a dangerous situation, but I was only about a 1/2 mi. from an exit. Driving 35 mph they worked OK.
Is the remedy new motors?

check the bolts holding the wiper arm in place, my 99 did the same thing but my bolts were loose and it would sling the wipers everywhere

^ I second rain-x. It works really well, and at highway speeds you dont need wipers
