Default Maintenance on F150

So tomorrow I am pulling my fuel filter to replace it and according the the hanes manual I have it says I have to use a special tool to remove some clips, do you have to use this tool to pull it?

I am also looking at changing the rear diff fluid, is there a drain plug, I don't see one. Plus does anyone know how much fluid the rear needs? I have a F150 5.4L 4x4. Thanks

yeah you need the tool. you can get one for like ten bucks.

There isn't a drain plug just pull the cover. I think you will need 3 quarts just fill until the fluid is level with the fill plug on the back. And if you have limited slip make sure you get gear oil with friction modifier.

Good luck

For the fuel filter, you will need the tool. When you replace the fuel filter, start by running the truck, then pulling the fuse for the fuel pump, let it run till it chugs a little, that way the pressure is off the fuel lines (It's a pain in the a** to do it with pressure on them, and all the gas you'll get sprayed on you). Shut the truck off and prepare for some fun. Then you'll need to pop the safety clips off, which just slide down the line out of the way, you can do that with just your hands. This is where the tool comes in, you'll use the Fuel Filter Tool to slide into the line connection, from the filter towards the line. You'll want to pull the line back towards the filter when you insert the tool to insure that it goes all the way in, this tool will allow the line to slide over the catch on the end of the filter and the line, it's a safety thing for all that pressure. Pull the line off both sides using the tool and then pop the filter out of the clamp. Getting the old one out of the clamp is easier said than done in most cases, since it's getting replaced, get the biggest screwdriver you have in the case of someone with limited tools, and pry it out, takes a bit of work. Then pop the new one in (without smashing it up with screwdriver), reconnect the lines (you shouldn't need the tool for that), make sure they are over the catch by tugging away from the filter with them, and put the safety clips back into place.

After that, have some Redneck fun and blow into the old filter to see how much crud comes out of it. Always fun, a lot of the time it looks like mud.

As for the rear diff. fluid, someone else will need to chime in, as I haven't gotten around to that on my truck yet since I got it. It's one of the next things on my list though, maybe I just need to look through my Haynes Manual. Haha.

Hope that helps you out some, and I see you're newer to the forum, so welcome! Enjoy your stay, you're gonna learn a lot!

There IS a plug on the drivers side of your diff to refill it. It has a square hole in it and you can just put a torque wrench in it if you have the right size.

It's in the Power Distribution Box under the hood, meaning the big boy fuse box sitting right behind where the air intake comes out of the fender. It's gonna be a 20 Amp fuse in the number 19 Position, meaning, if you're looking at the fuse box from the driver's side looking towards the engine, it will be the one on the far left back corner. The corner towards the engine and the air filter, if that makes sense.

If you do get confused on that fuse's position, go to this link, http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pub.../97f12og1e.pdf , and type in Power Distribution Box in the search function, (well, the box says find, but it's still a search) it's for my '97 but it should be the same on your's.
